Greener World

Handmade

A strong focus on quality craftsmanship with natural materials that stand the test of time. Our fabrics are made by traditional handcrafters using 100% sustainable materials.

What is the process of creating fabrics?
WEAVING. Following spinning and dyeing, the weaving process enables the yarn to intersect together to become fabrics. When the weft yarn crosses the warp yarn the fabric is created, a synthesis between the quality of the raw material, the creativity of the design, the structure and the experience of the weaver.

How is fabric made by hand?
Hand spinning can be done by using a spindle or the spinning wheel. Spinning turns the carded wool fibres into yarn which can then be directly woven, knitted (flat or circular), crocheted, or by other means turned into fabric or a garment. The spinning wheel collects the yarn on a bobbin.

Small Businesses

We celebrate and value the skilled work of these sustainable businesses and it is our privilege to play a role in the continuation of these traditional techniques.

For over 5 years, EMPHES has been in partnership with craftspeople and businesses from around the world to create beautiful, original fabrics and leather accessories. Our designers spend much of the year travelling between Scandinavia, France, India, Italy, China and Sri Lanka

Seeking out new craftsmen and working closely with our existing makers to create the most intricate woven cloths, tweeds, checks and embroideries – to name but a few. Great dedication, attention to detail and skill goes into each collection. Here we tell the stories behind our products.

We collaborate with artisans from around the world to create original fabrics and handmade pieces, whether it be shoe making in Northamptonshire, ikat weaving and block printing in India or indigo-dyeing in Japan. Everything we do, from choosing a particular yarn to our campaign photography, conveys a different pace to the bustle of everyday life. It’s no more evident than in our garments. Our design team create timeless pieces in modern, easy silhouettes and quality fabrics to ensure they last.

At Emphes Lifestyle we search globally for suppliers with the best strengths for their product areas, and put equal importance and emphasis on their ethical standards and working practices. Please read our Modern Slavery Statement. We pride ourselves in developing longstanding relationships with many of our clients.

We have worked in partnership with most of our suppliers over many years. We visit them regularly and work through any problems constructively. We do this through a corrective action plan with an agreed time frame and do our upmost to support their efforts to conform to our standards. We have written a Emphes Lifestyle Code of Conduct that all suppliers must read, sign and agree to before carrying out any production.

Sustainability

The renewed popularity of green living has benefits for creative folks as well, including new sustainable fabrics and innovate ideas for reusing a plethora of resources.

In terms of the materials we use, we have been steadily decreasing the use of manmade fibres in our garments over recent years. We are proud to be able to say that at present, over 85% of the materials we use are natural, which includes organic cotton. We only accept synthetic materials, such as polyester or nylon, under exceptional circumstances where the performance or durability would be compromised, such as socks, swimwear or certain blended yarns for knitwear or tailoring.

However, even then we will limit the blend to no more than approximately 20% of the overall fibre composition. We are working hard to find alternatives for elastane, and are researching options for using recycled materials – we currently use recycled cashmere in our loungewear collection.

What does sustainability mean?

What is sustainability? Sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we also need social and economic resources. Sustainability is not just environmental- ism.

UNITED NATIONS

Social Conscience

We are keenly aware of our impact on people and the planet. We create clothes and home products that are durable - both in their life cycle and in their style - making it possible to use them for many years, if not decades to come. As a responsible business, we want to leave the environments and communities we touch improved upon by our conscious actions.

By looking at our impact areas, we have set out a roadmap to enrich and educate, contribute through collaboration, cherish our materials and minimise our waste. Community is at the heart of every facet of our business and we believe our best path forward isn’t as a singular voice but a collaborative one, working closely with our customers, suppliers and makers. Together, we hope to create long-lasting and low-impact products to be cherished both today and tomorrow.
